SAFETY INSTRUCTION FOR GRILLING(BBQ)

Care and foresight will guarantee safety!

A fire blanket or hand fire extinguisher next to the grill will help in the event of damage.

Do not leave the hot grill unattended and keep children and pets at a safe distance!

Remember to also consider your neighbors when grilling.

Barbecues for outdoor use must not be used indoors. The use of a disposable grill is considered an open fire and making an open fire on the balcony or terrace is prohibited.

Charcoal grill (Summer Cottages, Villa, Villa Holm)

Choose a location for the charcoal grill so that there is no risk of the fire spreading to the terrain or the building. Use pieces of ignition, not ignition fluid, gasoline either alcohol.

Empty the grill ashes into a non-combustible ashtray on a non-combustible surface away from the building’s exterior walls and other flammable materials.

LPG grill (Seaside saunas, Cottage Holm, BBQ shelter)

Check the condition and tightness of the LPG grill regularly.

Test the connection between the bottle and the pressure regulator by lifting the bottle from the connection point. If you notice the smell of gas, immediately close the bottle valve and turn off all open flames, as liquefied petroleum gas ignites with the slightest spark.

Gas grills have a so-called grease plate. Remove grease that has accumulated on the damper, as there is a particularly high risk of grease fire in a damper that has accumulated a lot of grease.

Close the bottle valve when the grill is not in use. The temperature of the LPG bottle must not exceed 40 ° C, ie it cannot be stored on a sunny balcony or wall. The gas cylinder must be kept upright.

Using your Kamado Joe Classic grill (Villa, Villa Holm)

Charcoal & air flow

  1. Build a mound of charcoal that starts just below the holes in the side of the fire box with the peak of the mound just below the top of the fire ring.
  2. Build the mound with large chunks at the bottom and smaller ones as you build it. Dumping charcoal directly into the fire box will allow small pieces to block the air holes in the fire grate, which can prevent you from reaching grilling and searing temperatures.
  3. Charcoal can be relit for multiple cooking, even for 2-3 times. Use the ash tool to stir the used charcoal, so the ashes will drop through the fire grate. Add 1/3 new charcoal to the existing charcoal and build a new mound. This works well for roasting and grill temperatures. A full fire box of only fresh charcoal is recommended for smoking and searing temperatures. Charcoal Tip: You can’t have too much charcoal, but you can have too little.

Lighting

  1. Light the charcoal with a fire starter cube or two, chimney starter, electric starter or other method. 2. Open the bottom draft door and leave the dome up.
  2. Wait 8-10 minutes for the charcoal to build a small bed of embers.
  3. Close the dome, open the top vent fully and adjust the air flow as needed until you reach the target temperature. Lighting Tip: Never use lighter fluid or any other combustible liquid.

CAUTIONS! Do not use lighter fluids, gas or other combustible liquids. Liquid chemicals are a fire hazard, and they will impregnate the ceramic material and impart an undesirable taste to food. Do not use “Instant Light” briquettes. It will impart an undesirable taste. Do not use briquette charcoal. This type of charcoal cannot reach temperatures above 260°C and it does not offer true charcoal flavor.

Controlling the temperature

Achieving a consistent temperature as high as 400°C or as low as 110°C is easy on your Kamado Joe Grill. In fact, you can maintain low temperatures for up to 12 hours without adding any charcoal.

  1. Close the dome and fully open the top vent.
  2. When you are 30°C from your target temperature, close the top vent down to about 1/4 open.
  3. Wait one minute and close or open the top vent to lower or increase the temperature. A 1/4” can change the temperature by as much as 30°C. Temperature Tip: Use all fresh charcoal for high temperature searing.

Achieving low temperatures

  • For “low and slow” temperatures like 110°C, start with a very small fire in one area of the charcoal.
  • Close the dome and allow the temperature to come up slowly with the draft door open 2” and the top vent open 1/2” and the daisy wheel holes fully open.
  • This method may take 30-45 minutes to reach your target temperature, but it will ensure a long and slow cooking period. Low Temperature
  • Tip: It is easy to raise the temperature, but it is very difficult to lower the temperature if you go over your target temperature.

After grilling

  • Please close the dome as well as the air holes and the hatch to turn off the grill and leave the coals waiting for the next grill session.
  • This is how you operate in an environmentally friendly way. Thank you!
  • For more read: kamadojoe.com You will find a QR code with instructions on the wall next to the Kamado.

Fireplace user manual (Villa vacuum fireplace)

  • Always open the damper above the fireplace before lighting.
  • Also open the lower air slide by sliding it to the right to the end position.
  • Use small trees and paper for lighting, you will find firewood on the terrace.
  • Let the fireplace door open slightly at the beginning to allow the fireplace to warm up. If smoke starts to come out, close the door.
  • Do not leave a burning fireplace unattended.
  • Do not store any flammable material in front of the fireplace

When the fire goes out, don’t close the damper too soon, no red coal must be visible. Closing the damper too early causes carbon monoxide poisoning! The use of ignition fluids is strictly prohibited. If you have got fire alarm, please text us with house number +358 440 872 875

Smokehouse instructions (BBQ shelter)

Smoker room – food items can be smoked on the grate or by hanging using dedicated stainless-steel rods. There is a sawdust or chips chamber under the smoking room

At the bottom of the smoke oven there is a heating stove with ash room (the lower door). The smoke oven can be heated by any kind tree, as the smoke coming from the heating stove goes directly to the chimney and does not come through the smoke chamber. To ventilate the smoke chamber, you can open the roof and use two ventilation openings on the sides at the bottom of the smoke chamber.

Smoking

  • Place dry trees in the lower hearth and light them. Place either meat or fish in the smoking area. If you smoke fish, keep the vents on the side open until the fish is dry, then start smoking.
  • Place hardwood (except birch) chips or wood chips in the sawdust or chips chamber. Different wood chips like cherry, plum or apple may be added to smoke to obtain flavors.
  • Add nettles to the smoking room to get a golden yellow color. You can find sawdust in the box next to the smoke oven.
  • Do not close the vents until the oven temperature has risen to the desired level and smoke has started to enter the smoking chamber.
  • The oven temperature can be adjusted by opening and closing the ash door.
  • When using the oven repeatedly, make sure that there is not too much ash in the ash space after previous use.
  • When you have finished smoking, ventilate the smoking chamber and clean the bottom pan.
